Chicago capitalized on a pair of Boston miscues and several timely hits to erase any doubt early, turning a 1-0 lead into a commanding 6-0 advantage. Dave Nicholson started the scoring with a second-inning home run and later forced home a run with a bases-loaded walk during the decisive third-frame uprising.

The big blow came when Mike Hershberger lined a two-out single that cleared the bases, driving home three runs and sending White Sox starter Gary Peters to the mound with a comfortable cushion. Peters, who was later named the game’s Most Valuable Player, kept the Red Sox in check through seven innings. Boston finally broke through in the sixth when Lu Clinton’s run-scoring double highlighted a three-run rally that narrowed the margin to 6-3.

Chicago quickly answered any thoughts of a comeback by scoring twice in the eighth inning. J.C. Martin delivered an RBI single and Joe Cunningham added another run-scoring hit as the White Sox stretched the lead to five runs once more. Peters finished with a winning effort before Frank Baumann retired the final six Boston hitters. Cunningham collected three hits for Chicago while Hershberger drove in three runs, helping the White Sox secure an impressive 8-3 victory on April 18 in another memorable chapter of Earl’s 1964 Replay League.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="948"
